Even the most effective way to brush your teeth with brush, I can not eliminate the accumulated plaque between the teeth and cleansing the gums, which makes dentists recommend the use of the dental floss.

These are recommended especially for patients who have particular need such as those with extensive fillings, crowns or bridge, orthodontic patients or patients with particular periodontal problems.

Recommended Flossing Technique

  • Starting with clean hands, break off about 45cm of dental floss from its dispenser.
  • Wind one end of the floss around a middle finger of one hand. Wrap the other end and most of the floss on the same finger of the other hand, leaving a small length about 10 cm stretching between the hands.
  • With the floss held tightly between thumb and forefinger or using your interdental flosser, use a gentle sawing motion to guide the floss between adjacent teeth.
  • Take care not to snap the floss against the gums when doing this to avoid injury.
  • Repeat this scrubbing action to clean plaque off the adjacent tooth.
  • If preferred, interdental flossers can be used and wash hands again after flossing.

Many people hate flossing. Why? Well, for some people, taking out a piece of floss, wrapping it around their index and middle fingers, placing it between two teeth, and then moving it to remove food or dental plaque can be too much of a process. There are easier options to clean between the teeth like dental flossers, toothpicks, interdental brushes and even battery-powered or electrical flossing devices.

Regardless of the method, if you’re someone who just doesn’t like flossing or you don’t fully understand it, it’s crucial to remember why flossing is an important part of a healthy smile.
